Part 1 of this post can be found here.

As I wrote about earlier in the week, I had the chance to take a tour of the new Wisconsin Dells Kalahari Indoor Theme Park last weekend. It doesn’t officially open for another week. It is a spectacular attraction that is going to be very popular among visitors to the Dells. At the bottom of this post you’ll see several pictures I took during my tour. There are several observations that I made that I didn’t cover in Part 1 of my post, that I will cover here.

There are a couple of different pricing options for guests of the theme park. All day passes are available for $30 (or $20 if you’re a guest of the hotel). The all day pass includes unlimited rides on the Ferris wheel, mini-golf, ropes course, rock climbing wall, merry-go-round, soft play area, and laser tag. You also get a maximum of 2 rides on the go karts with an all day pass. Rob White, the General Manager of the theme park explained to me that they expect the go karts to be extremely poplular and decided to limit the rides to 2 in order to give everyone a chance to ride. Bowling and the golf simulators are not included in the all day passes. Tickets for individual attractions are available as well, and are priced as follows:

Go Karts – $6 per person

Ferris Wheel – $3 per person

Soft Play Area – $3 per person (free for hotel guests)

Merry-Go-Round – $4 per person

Mini-Golf - $5 per person

Ropes Course – $7 per person

Rock Climbing Wall – $5 per person

Laser Tag – $6 per person

Golf Simulator – $25 per person per hour (clubs included)

Bowling – $4.50 per game

Bowling Shoes rental – $2.50

I had reported earlier in the year that the name of the theme park was going to be Kilimanjaro. When I visited, I noticed that there was no reference at all to this name and asked Rob why it was dropped. He said that they decided to include Kalahari in the name, and keep it simple by naming it the Kalahari Indoor Theme Park. I liked the Kilimanjaro name, but understand the reason for the change.

Damon’s Grill was previously a stand alone building. As a part of the theme park construction, they connected Damon’s to the hotel, and the theme park. The opposite end of the theme park connects to the Desert Star Cinema. Now that everything is connected, Kalahari guests who are staying in the Sands Condominium building can now walk from their room all the way to the movie theater if they wish. This would be an extremely long walk – approaching a mile. Kalahari offers a free shuttle bus for guests for those who don’t want to walk such a long distance.

One of the things you’ll notice if you take a look at the pictures below is the artist painting one of the murals in the theme park. I was surprised to learn that all of the beautiful murals that are painted throughout the Kalahari complex have been hand painted.

During my visit to the Dells back in April, is when I first noticed construction on the theme park. At the time it hadn’t even been announced yet. When I asked people working at the hotel what was going on, they wouldn’t tell me. When the theme park was officially announced in May they said it would be open by Christmas. I had trouble believing that a project of this magnitude could be completed in such a short period of time. Touring the theme park, I still wonder how they could have completed this incredible facility so quickly. When the Kalahari Indoor Theme Park opens their doors for business one week from today, it will be one of the top attractions in the Dells for many years to come.

This past weekend was another Kalahari Family Nights special weekend, and my family found ourselves at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells again. With the grand opening of the Kalahari Indoor Theme Park just around the corner, I inquired to see if I could get a sneak peek tour of the new theme park before it opens on December 19th. The folks at the Kalahari graciously agreed to my request.

I met with Rob White, the General Manager of the new theme park. Rob previously managed a couple of other similar theme parks in Florida before being hired and moving to Wisconsin in September. If I had to use one word to describe the new indoor theme park, it would be incredible. Although Wisconsin Dells has a couple of other indoor amusement parks (Knuckleheads & Mt. Olympus Indoor Theme Park), the Kalahari Indoor Theme Park will be bringing several new attractions not seen anywhere else in the Dells.

The centerpiece of the $20 million, 110,000 square foot complex is the 6 story Ferris wheel. The Ferris wheel is situated so that it faces I-90/94. As we arrived in the Dells, we saw the Ferris wheel beautifully lit up from the highway. Next to the Ferris wheel is the 2 story go kart track. The go karts will have cars for single and double riders, so parents can ride with their children if they would like. Underneath the elevated go kart track is the 18 hole Madagascar Mini-Golf course. During my tour it was a little hard to tell that it was going to be a mini golf course since the green turf hadn’t been installed yet. In fact, it was apparent during my tour that a lot of work still needed to be done in the next two weeks before the park could open. Rob assured me that they were on schedule, and there was no doubt in his mind that they would be fully operational on December 19th.

In the vicinity of the go karts and mini golf course are the rock climbing walls, and the ropes course, which is located high above the main floor. The ropes course wasn’t something that initially appealed to me, but after seeing it high above the floor, I think I’ll give it a try on a future visit. Participants on the ropes course are fastened into a safety harness and then are allowed to climb on 22 different climbing activities.

Throughout the main level of the theme park will be many different video games and redemption games. For younger children there is an African themed merry-go-round with several unique animals not typically seen on a carousel – giraffes, lions, gorillas, tigers, zebras, birds, and cheetahs. There is also an indoor play area called Kenya’s Jungle for the little ones to play in. The lower level of the complex houses the laser tag arena. During our visit, the artists were putting the finishing touches on the outer space themed murals on the walls and the neon obstacles throughout the laser tag area.

The second level of the complex is the more “adult” area. This is where the 24 bowling lanes are located. There is a large bar and dance floor. The back of the bar area opens up and offers patrons an incredible view of the main floor of the theme park below. There are also two high definition golf simulators in the bar area. I have seen golf simulators before, but have never had the chance to actually use one. Rob let me take a few swings on the virtual driving range. It was really cool, and very realistic.

There are a couple of different dining options to visitors of the facility. Damon’s Grill is located right at the entrance to the theme park from the hotel. The restaurant has been closed since the beginning of December as they remodel and renovate the restaurant to incorporate it into the theme park. One of the changes to Damon’s will be the addition of “outdoor” seating that will be outside the walls of Damon’s, and inside the theme park. There is also a dining area on the main level of the theme park that will offer pizza, burgers, sandwiches, etc. Food service will also be available in the bar on the upper level.

During my tour I took several pictures of the theme park and all of the attractions. I will be posting those in the next couple of days. I will also discuss the pricing of the rides, and offer a few more observations about this incredible addition to the Kalahari and the Wisconsin Dells.

The new Kalahari entertainment complex that was announced in May is taking shape, and it has been given a name. The $15 million, 110,000 square foot facility has been named Kilimanjaro. Naming the complex after the largest mountain in Africa is appropriate since this building is massive. The shell of the building seems nearly complete. It spans from the Desert Star Cinema to Damon’s – several hundred feet. When I visited in April, construction had just begun and the development hadn’t been announced. Kalahari is still promising an opening by Christmas. Looking at the development from the outside, there appears to be a lot that needs to be done yet. Christmas is still over 3 months away, but I would be surprised to see it open on schedule.

The Kalahari resort in Wisconsin Dells announced today that they are building a $15 million, 110,000 square foot indoor entertainment center. When I visited the Kalahari a couple of weeks ago, site work had just begun on the new entertainment center. I asked around at the hotel, and no one except for the concerige seemed to know what was going on. The only thing the concierge said was that it was going to be a lot of fun, and they hoped it would open in July. The July opening threw me off a bit, because I didn’t think anything of substance would be able to be constructed so quickly. Well, she was either misinformed, or trying to deceive me because the announcement today said it would be open by December.

It sounds like it is going to be quite an addition to the already sprawling Kalahari complex. Included in the plans are: A 6 story ferris wheel, 24 bowling lanes, go karts for kids and adults, a carousel, laser tag, 3 play areas including 2 inflatable play areas, an arcade, a ropes course, indoor mini golf, 2 golf simulators, a sports bar, and a dance floor.

The new addition will be located in the open area between Damon’s Grill and the Desert Star Cinema.

During my visit to the Dells last week, I noticed construction starting at the Kalahari between Damon’s Grill and the Desert Star Cinema. The area was fenced off and there was a large crane on the site. The presence of the crane suggests something big is going to be built. I inquired with the concierge at the hotel, and she was very coy with her response. She wouldn’t give me any hints as to what it was. She did say that it was going to be a lot of fun, and they hoped it would open in July. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what it is…
